Vaali was born as T. S. Rangarajan on 29 October 1931 in Srirangam, Tamil Nadu. He had a passion for writing since his childhood and started composing poems at the age of nine. He moved to Chennai in 1951 and joined the film industry as an assistant to the director Krishnan-Panju. He also acted in a few films, such as Sorgam (1970) and Hey Ram (2000).
Vaali's first song as a lyricist was \"Nilave Ennidam Nerungathe\" for the film Ratha Thilagam (1963), composed by K. V. Mahadevan. He soon became one of the most sought-after lyricists in Tamil cinema, working with legendary composers such as M. S. Viswanathan, Ilaiyaraaja, A. R. Rahman and Harris Jayaraj. He also wrote songs for Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada films.
