Skanda Sashti Kavacham: A Powerful Hymn to Lord Murugan
Skanda Sashti Kavacham is a popular Tamil devotional song composed by Devaraya Swamigal in praise of Lord Murugan, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The word Kavacham means a shield or armor that protects the wearer from all kinds of dangers and evils. The hymn consists of 244 lines that describe the glory, attributes and blessings of Lord Murugan.
Skanda Sashti Kavacham is recited by devotees during the six-day festival of Skanda Sashti, which falls in the lunar month of Kartika (October-November). Skanda Sashti commemorates the victory of Lord Murugan over the demon Surapadma and his army. According to legend, Surapadma and his brothers Tarakasura and Simhamukha were powerful demons who oppressed the gods and humans. The gods approached Lord Shiva and requested him to create a son who could defeat the demons. Lord Shiva agreed and created six sparks from his third eye, which were carried by Agni (the god of fire) and Vayu (the god of wind) to the Himalayas. There, the sparks were transformed into six babies, who were nursed by six divine mothers called Karthigai Pengal. Later, Goddess Parvati embraced the six babies and they merged into one child with six heads and twelve arms. This child was named Skanda or Kartikeya.
Skanda grew up to be a brave and handsome warrior, who was appointed as the commander-in-chief of the gods' army. He led the war against Surapadma and his forces on the sixth day of Skanda Sashti. He split his lance (Vel) into two and killed Surapadma and Simhamukha with one half, while he subdued Tarakasura with the other half. He then freed the gods and humans from their tyranny and restored peace and harmony in the world. The day of his victory is celebrated as Soorasamharam or Surasamharam, which means the slaying of Surapadma. The next day is celebrated as Thiru Kalyanam or Subrahmanya Sashti, which means the divine marriage of Skanda with his consorts Valli and Devasena.
Skanda Sashti Kavacham is believed to be a powerful mantra that invokes the grace and protection of Lord Murugan. It is said that whoever recites it with faith and devotion will be blessed with good health, wealth, happiness, success, courage, wisdom and spiritual enlightenment. It is also said that reciting it will help one overcome obstacles, enemies, diseases, debts, sins and karmic effects. It is recommended to recite it daily or at least on Skanda Sashti days.
